Gavin's Homemade Valentines

Ah, sweet Gavin.  This holiday was made for him.  There's nothing he likes better than snuggling and eating chocolate.  Really, what else is there?

Here are the Valentines he will be handing out to his preschool buddies.  To be fair, I should tell you that this was not my idea.  I read about this idea on a great website called I Am Momma, Hear Me Roar.  Since hers were so adorable, I decided to try it, too.

You should know that I've resorted to taking photographs in my classroom, because, frankly, the light is much better there.  Also, by the time I get home from work, it's dark, so my pictures don't turn out well.  So if you see a stray pencil or random student in the background, you'll know why.  I promise you, there is LEARNING going on there.  It isn't just crafting all the time!

Back to the Valentines.

I took a few photos of Gavin making the kissy-face, and a few of him smiling.  Then, I uploaded the photos on to Picnik.  If you haven't gotten yourself a free Picnik account yet, what are you waiting for?  It's an awesome, FREE photo editing website.  I love it.  Picnik is actually quite easy to use.  Basically, I used their collage feature, and uploaded the two pictures of Gavin.  Then I used their sticker feature to create the white squares with text.  If you need the play-by-play, check out this post. Cheri does a great job of explaining all of the steps.

Once I had the collage done, I was good to go.  The baggies I was using were about 8 inches wide, so I copied and pasted the collage into a Word document.  I changed the orientation to "landscape" and stretched the collage (which was in a jpeg format) until it was about 8 inches wide.  That way I knew it would completely cover the top of the baggie.

All that was left for me to do was print!  (I used regular computer paper because that's all I had on hand.  Card stock would look much, much better!)  Then I trimmed the paper so I could make a little tent:

I filled the baggie with goodies and stapled the paper-tent over the top!  Done!  An easy, adorable, homemade Valentines treat.

Look how pleased this little sweetheart is!  What a love.
