First Sewing Project

You may remember that I'm not big on New Year's Resolutions.  But I do set goals for myself on a regular basis.  One of them is to learn to sew.  My mom is a fantastic seamstress.  (I almost wrote sew-er, but that would have confused you, because it's spelled s-e-w-e-r, and I didn't want you to think of, like, sewage.  Ew.)

She is also a fantastic knitter, and cook, and baker, and mom, and grandmom.  I have a lot to live up to.

I asked her to give me sewing lessons, and she agreed.  I think it probably took all of her self-control not to jump in and just do this project herself, because that's just the kind of lady she is.  A go-getter.  But she let me do it, and she talked me through it.  And I know it was an easy project, but I'm really happy with the way it turned out.

I took this fabric:

And I cut it, and measured it, and ironed it, and pinned it:

And now it's Gavin's valance!

Not bad for my first try!  I already have my next project in mind....  :)

  1. Looks great! I love the print. I have yet to try a valance that I have sewed. I also have a spring project in mind with some fabric I have had FOREVER! It will be my first easy garment.

  4. gurtband Wow, cool post. I'd like to write like this too - taking time and real hard work to make a great article... but I put things off too much and never seem to get started. Thanks though.
